Several years ago Forest
Studio Publications produced the first three editions of
a proposed series of booklets entitled British Fire
Brigades but unfortunately due to production
problems and costs no further booklets in the series were
published.
The three booklets which
were printed were:
Part 1 - Hampshire, Dorset
and the Isle of Wight
Part 2 - Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Avon
Part 3 - Mid Glamorgan, South Glamorgan, West Glamorgan
& Gwent
These came out between 1982
and 1985 in a pocket sized format and gave
information regarding each individual brigade, all of its
fire stations (each illustrated) and the fire appliances
operated. Station turnout figures, types of risk, number
of personnel and station building date were among the
details given on each fire station page.
Black and white throughout,
these booklets have proved to be of great interest to the
firefighter, historian and enthusiast. Although Part 2 is
now out of print, Part 1 and Part 3 are still available
and are priced at £ 1.60.
In 1987 an A5 size black
and white booklet entitled Fire Brigades of the
Channel Isles was produced which contained
information about the brigades on Jersey, Guernsey,
Alderney and Sark. Pictures of all appliances (local
authority and airport) were included as well as the fire
stations and other items of fire service interest. A few
of these are still available priced £ 2.50.
An A4 magazine
style publication (using professionally printed
photocopies) entitled Flare Up covered all
sorts of topics including the Avon Rubber works brigade
in Wiltshire, Coventry Airport fire brigade, Irish
hydraulic platforms, archive photographs from Cardiff,
Bournemouth, Watford and Hampshire, Londons special
appliances, a school brigade in Devon and lots more.
Issued in 1991, copies can be obtained for £ 2.25.
The history of the fire
brigade in Ferndown, Dorset was published to mark the
opening, in 1993, of the refurbished fire station which
is a converted chapel. Printed on an A5 format, the
booklet has a colour cover and contains numerous
photographs of the brigade and its equipment during the
previous 54 years. These are priced at £ 2.00.
All of the above (with the exception of British Fire
Brigades Part 2) can be obtained by writing to Fire-Aid
International (FSP Dept.), 14 Meadow Close, Burley,
Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 4EJ. Cheques should be made
payable to Forest Studio Publications.
