ST HELENA FIRE SERVICE

A UK government aid package was formulated to help the St Helena Fire Service on the remote island in the South Atlantic (where Napoleon Bonaparte finished his days). Following a detailed report of recommendations by Bournemouth based fire consultant Simon Adamson in 1994, three appliances - two water tenders and a rescue tender - plus a large quantity of new and second-hand equipment were shipped during early 1995, aboard the RMS St Helena, out of Cardiff. The island's new Deputy Chief Fire Officer Stan Young accompanied the vehicles and the whole project was co-ordinated by Fire-Aid International. Among the new equipment was lightweight Protector Sabre breathing apparatus. Fire-Aid International also arranged for the supply and shipping of a new "Reid" portable steel building for use as a fire station.
